During Spring 2024, ICA’s Narratives Outreach Program brought Miami-based artist Isabella Marie Garcia to collaborate with middle and high school participants in partnership with Girl Power, Urgent Inc, and AMIKids Key Biscayne. Over the course of eight weeks, students participated in a series of alternative photography workshops that spoke and reflected on the concept of identity as affected by displacement in analyzing immigration via exile, gentrification in their neighborhoods, race and gender-based systemic issues, and ecological concerns. Students directly engaged with pinhole cameras, cyanotypes, anthotypes, chlorophyll printing, and oil-based photo transfers. Created in conversation, they looked introspectively at their own personal and collective identities, reflecting on the environments surrounding them.

ICA Narratives is a community arts program taught by Miami-based teaching artists with the goal to increase self-esteem and provide exposure and access to the arts that allow participants to express their own narrative through creative work.

“Uprooted” is curated and organized by Isabella Marie Garcia, Teaching Artist and Jessica Helsinger, Narratives Site Coordinator
